Bespoke Umbilical Protection Solutions for Taiwan Strait: Combining Impact Protection & Ballast Weight

The Client

Our client is a leading developer in the subsea energy sector in Taiwan, deeply engaged in offshore wind and subsea power transmission projects across the Taiwan Strait and its surrounding waters.

The Challenge

Taiwan Strait is characterized by exceptionally high current velocities and a complex seabed, which subjected the array cables to severe dynamic stress and the risk of displacement against subsea steel structures. Our customer required a umbilical protection solution that would not only withstand significant abrasion and impact but also provide added weight for enhanced stability.

The Solution

To address this challenge, we developed a customised protection solution based on our high-performance polyurethane systems.

Weighted Modular Design: By inserting lead-ballasted segments into our proven moulding tool, we manufactured a heavier variant of our standard protective solution.

Enhanced Stability: This bespoke design achieved the necessary stability for the cable over the subsea steel structure while maintaining superior abrasion and impact protection features.

Efficient Installation: To ensure a seamless offshore campaign, we provided a specialised pneumatic tool designed for quick and efficient installation in the field.

The Results

Extensive internal testing was conducted to confirm the quality and fit of our solution, ensuring it met all technical specifications. By the project’s completion, the customer’s requirements were fully satisfied, with the solution effectively mitigating risks of fatigue and displacement in the demanding Taiwan Strait environment. The dedicated work of our project management and supply chain teams ensured seamless delivery, leaving our customer delighted with the final result.
